Soluble Fiber - The Solutions For Better Cholesterol

While we love to eat “good”, we worry about weight gain after having “good” meals.  While there are so many factors for weight gain, Cholesterol typically has a strong association with overall health and weight management. Is there a solution to better management of your cholesterol?

The Food and Drug Administration gave an answer to that;

“Today the Food and Drug Administration announced that it has finalized a rule that allows foods containing barley to claim that they reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Specifically, whole grain barley and dry milled barley products such as flakes, grits, flour, and pearled barley, which provide at least 0.75 grams of soluble fiber per serving, may bear the following claim:

"Soluble fiber from foods such as [name of food], as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of [name of food] supplies [x] grams of the soluble fiber necessary per day to have this effect."

Coronary heart disease claims nearly half a million lives a year. High total cholesterol levels and high levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are known to increase one's risk for heart disease, so consumers are encouraged to keep these levels as low as possible. Scientific evidence indicates that including barley in a healthy diet can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by lowering LDL and total cholesterol levels.”

As stated in FDA release, Soluble Fiber found in Barley can help to reduce cholesterol and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Barley’s Soluble Fiber is also known as “Beta Glucan”.  While many clinical studies show that Barley’s Soluble Fiber (Beta Glucan) has a lot more health benefits, it definitely has an effect on cholesterol as FDA granted health claim.  

Although Barley is one of the oldest grains in the world, it is not as common as Quinoa and Brown rice as great nutrition provider. Maybe, Barley is more famous for malt (beer)?  But, it is great to know that Barley’s Soluble Fiber may help to reduce Cholesterol as it has not been on many people’s “grain” radar yet.  

Although regular exercise and/or well-balanced meals are important for overall health and weight management, it looks like that this little thing can make a difference.
